Materials:
One Well: The Story of Water on Earth. A container of water.
One Well: The Story of Water on Earth. A container of water.
Procedure:
- Read One Well. Discuss the interconnectedness of all water, and therefore all living beings. Introduce the concept of water supply, and the limited amount of water that we have available. Discuss some ways we waste water and pollution.
- Show the students the container of water. Ask them for some ways that water could be used.
- Have the students list as many ways they can think of to use water. After a few minutes, pair them up and repeat the exercise.
- Give the students Activity 1: Average Water Use Tally from the .pdf linked below. They are going to record their water use over three days, and then revisit, coming up with ways in which they could reduce their water use at home and at school.
- Ask students to think of five ways people could conserve water.
- Then pair or group the students up, have them share their ideas, and have each group make a poster with their five favorite ideas.
- Hang the posters in the classroom, and have each group tell the class about their ideas on how to conserve water.
Differentiation: Students may not be required to tally all of their water usage, or can have a lot of help from their parents.
Assessment:
Formative: Through discussion and coming up with five ways they use water, and five ways to conserve water.
Summative: Eventually via their running tally of water use at home and their ideas of how they could lessen that amount. Today, based off of their posters and discussion.
